Teletherapy

Occupational Therapy Teletherapy

Social distancing restrictions brought on by COVID-19 have brought the use of telehealth to the forefront of today’s healthcare system. Teletherapy is a great option for children and families who do not live close to specialized treatment, have scheduling restrictions, or would like in-home services from a skilled clinician. With family involvement, teletherapy has proven to be as beneficial, if not more so, than clinic-based services.

Using a virtual platform, families who may not otherwise be able to access sensory evaluation and/or treatment locally may do so from any part of the state in which their preferred clinician is licensed. Consultation services can be provided nationally.

Teletherapy is also very helpful for families with busy schedules, as well as families with multiple children and one primary caregiving parent. Spending hours traveling round-trip with a child and their siblings is stressful, to say the least. Virtual delivery of OT services works around a family’s schedule, eliminating drive time, and allowing siblings to remain at home.

Teletherapy can be a wonderful choice for families whose children struggle with challenging behaviors at home, as well as families seeking feeding therapy for their child. While the clinic environment may provide an ideal setting for treatment of underlying sensory issues, it fails to provide the treating therapist with a view into the home environment and family dynamics. Having the ability to see how families engage and interact during challenging moments provides natural teaching moments that can carryover well beyond the virtual session.
